Thanks for this info Stewart, I would like to take up water aerobics again which is a great form of exercise and gentle on the joints. I only hope that I'll have the energy to do it . 2 years ago I was exercising x3 a week and used to feel great after a work out, but now it seems as if I've lost my mojo as any form of exercise even thinking about it leaves me feeling exhausted. Methinks I need a personal trainer... Love, Barbara XXXXX

Smalls steps Barbara, small steps! If you can go to a gym, use the weight resistance machines ( you have much more control of the weight so you can exercise the muscles safely. ) Use the least amount of weight possible and just gently go through the range of movement. Do it slowly and gradually and then increase reps and sets and finally weight! Once you start seeing a little bit of progress you will feel much more confident! Hope I don't sound patronising! Shame you don't live local to my gym, Esporta as I would gladly help you out! A friend is someone who knows all about you but loves you anyway!

Thank you, patronising definitely not. Many years ago I belonged to a gym called the Kieser gym based the principles of a Swiss guy whose mantra was " A strong back knows no pain" and used weight resistance machines and the repetition exercises you mentioned. i think it's the old confidence that's missing at the moment..
Love,

Stewart - as I am mostly in a wheelchair I use hand weights. Will these help and, if not, can you think of anything else (apart from swimming) which may help me? Love Jxxxxxx

Jean, using dumbbells will definitely help.....obviously only your upper body. Do shoulder presses and curls. In fact while you're sitting you will be isolating the effort to your shoulders and arms so it will have a better effect! If you use really light weights and do high repetitions you can even have a cardiovascular effect, ( i.e heart and lungs ). In the gyms they have seated leg press machines which would be very good but I'm not sure of your leg mobility etc? A friend is someone who knows all about you but loves you anyway!

It depends how high I would have to lift my legs to get onto the darned thing! I'll have a look when I am swimming next time. Thanks for this. Jxxxx

It will be just like getting on a normal bed only you wouldn't have to lift your legs quite so high. Give it a try if you have the opportunity. Take your time and make sure you're comfortable Jean! A friend is someone who knows all about you but loves you anyway!
